What is gum disease?

Gum disease, more formally known as periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition caused by bacteria in plaque. As plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) accumulate on the teeth, the bacteria cause inflammation and irritation in the gum tissues. The early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, is characterized by gums that are swollen, tender, red, and bleed easily. If this condition is not properly treated, it may progress into periodontitis, or advanced gum disease. In this stage, the gums recede and pull away from the teeth, creating “pockets” where bacteria can thrive. Periodontitis may eventually lead to bone loss and tooth loss. Furthermore, untreated periodontal disease has been linked to several serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, respiratory conditions, and pregnancy complications.
